I have gotten involved in community organizations since my home country Peru. It was something totally new to be in charge of 20 people who were knocking on doors in San Jose. I couldn’t believe that there are so many US Citizens that have never voted before. We made them see the importance of the Latino vote specially at that point. We need many changes and it can’t be done unless we participate in politics. Without our power to vote, there isn’t much to be done. To me in particular, it is extremely important to have an immigration reform, to have more parks where people can participate in sports, and that our schools have the basic equipment and supplies to teach our children. Those are my motivations and that’s why it is so important to influence people to go vote. Even though we lost the election of Cindy Chavez for Mayor we were able to increase the vote for John Chiang and John Garamendi for Controller and Vice Governor. It was our first time that we had done a big campaign within our community. I believe we were very organized. New experiences and goals are the things that make us grow more as people or individuals and they make us improve as leaders in our communities. It is always helpful to train people who have the potential to lead others in the community. Next time, we will be even more organized, strong, and we will win!
